Broadcom Coding with Commitment® Winner is National STEM Champion

Caedon Newton, age 13, won the 2023 Broadcom Coding with Commitment® award at the Iowa State Science & Technology Fair for coding a method to keep passengers safe in autonomous cars. Now Broadcom Foundation is sponsoring students like Caedon as a National STEM Champion. His project, Car Warning Signals: The Effect of Distractions on Stopping Distance, An Analysis Using Python, addresses United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

As a major sponsor of the inaugural National STEM Challenge, Broadcom Foundation encouraged Caedon to compete in the “Tech For Good” category. He was chosen from thousands of entries as a National STEM Champion and will travel to Washington, D.C. from April 13-14 for the National STEM Festival.

“Young people like Caedon are tackling technological challenges in modern society by combining scientific knowledge with their coding skills to develop amazing solutions,” said Paula Golden, President of Broadcom Foundation. “It is no surprise that he has been recognized at the state and national levels for his project.”

“I hope to impact and inspire kids to learn to code like I did,” said Caedon. “It’s really exciting that I can be someone who helps bring a love of coding to others.”

Caedon is passing on his love for coding by teaching elementary students to code as a Peer Helper at his school. “I love working with them, and I hope they can see how interesting coding is and how they can eventually use it to solve problems,” said Caedon.

At the National STEM Festival, Caedon will showcase his investigation into how driver distractions can be reduced through car warning signals. He built an Arduino/C# coded reaction time meter and developed Python coding for data analysis.

“I love everything about coding, but my favorite part about it is that the possibilities of things you can do are endless. Whatever you set your mind on, you can make it a reality with coding.”
