“When I use programming, I feel like I can create or engineer anything on the computer.”

Tobe Muoto was recognized with the 2023 Broadcom Coding with Commitment award while in 7th grade at Stoller Middle School in Oregon for using coding to reduce the carbon footprint for Google searches.

Broadcom Coding with Commitment recognizes students in grades 5-8 who combine STEM learning with coding to solve a community problem they care about that aligns with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

When Tobe’s dad told him that data centers require a large amount of energy to function, he began to think about how daily activities on the Internet were emitting large amounts of carbon dioxide, and how there was no way to measure and reduce the impact of its carbon footprint.

“I wanted to solve this problem with the use of my favorite skill, coding,” said Tobe. “I used a mathematical process to calculate the carbon footprint of a Google search and then used Python programming to incorporate my findings into a calculator.”

Basic coding is a 21st Century+ skill that girls, under-resourced, and underrepresented youth need to become digitally literate and compete for highly skilled jobs in emerging industries built on technologies of the future.

“I started coding to create games with Javascript and Python and realized I can develop any computer application, website, game or console app that I want – the possibilities are endless!” said Tobe. “I found out that I can use my knowledge of coding to tackle some of the problems that face the world today.”

Last year, Tobe created a program on emotional therapy. In the future, he wants to use coding to help with cybersecurity, and to measure and decrease the carbon footprint from other forms of Internet use. “I want to keep using code to transform the world into a cleaner, safer and more enjoyable place.”

Congratulations, Tobe!

“When I won, I couldn't believe it. For a moment I thought that I had heard wrong, and I shouldn't go up, but I looked at the screen, and I was overwhelmed with a feeling of immense joy,” said Tobe. “I felt like others saw the potential that my work had to bring a change in the way we think about strategies to prevent non-sustainable activities.”
