There’s something special about getting people together to do something good for the local community.
The excitement and energy on the iconic shore of Huntington Beach, Calif., were palpable this week, when 1,000 Broadcom employees gathered for a massive volunteer event to benefit three Orange County nonprofit organizations.
Broadcom, along with other Fortune 500 companies, has been stepping up its game when it comes to corporate social responsibility. Forbes Magazine recently noted the “growing importance and visibility of corporate social responsibility efforts globally” and that “smart companies are doing more than just patting employees on the back for their charitable efforts” in a recent story about corporate social responsibility.
Broadcom is big on encouraging employees to do good in the communities where they live and work. This week, Broadcom Foundation kicked off the annual Broadcom Community Heroes program to recognize employees for extraordinary individual volunteer service. Employees can nominate themselves or a fellow employee for being a “Broadcom Hero,” and those chosen can name a charitable organization to receive a $500 donation from Broadcom.
Do you have the warm-fuzzies yet?

Back at the beach this week, Broadcom volunteers worked elbow-to-elbow to benefit the community by giving back to three local charities.
The volunteers were organized into stations. They helped repair books for Think Together!, an education nonprofit; packed food for Kids Against Hunger, which provides meals for children and their families in developing countries and the U.S.; and collected canned goods for the Orange County Food Bank.
Their activities included:
- Repairing and restoring some 19,200 books, which were for high-quality, academically oriented out-of-school programs for youth in under-resourced communities.
- Packing 51,840 dehydrated meals – more than 8,640 bags —to help feed hungry children in the U.S. and throughout the world.
- Completed a competition in which teams built familiar structures out of canned goods, and were judged on creativity, spirit and teamwork. After the event, some 10,000 cans were donated to Orange County Food Bank.
