Newsweek: Broadcom Boosts Green Rankings, Places Among Top 100 U.S. Companies

Saving water, lowering energy use, and tracking at the environmental footprint of the supply chain are all important parts of Broadcom’s corporate social responsibility efforts. But most important, perhaps, is transparency.

That’s the theme that takes center stage in this year’s Green Rankings by Newsweek. The rankings look at corporate sustainability and environmental impact practices at the 500 largest publicly-traded companies in the U.S. and around the globe. The list is an important bellwether for measuring the many ways in which the private sector plays an increasingly important role in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Broadcom first landed on the list five years ago and has made a stellar ascent on the Newsweek Green Rankings. The company broke the top 100 U.S. companies list this year, with a ranking of No. 80. That’s up from a 2012 ranking of No. 376. (Newsweek did not publish a list in 2013).

The Newsweek Green Rankings consist of two separate rankings based on publicly available data. The U.S. 500 ranks the 500 largest publicly-traded companies in the United States by market capitalization, while the Global 500 looks at the 500 largest publicly-traded companies globally by market capitalization. Given the overlap between these two universes, a total of 809 companies were researched in this year’s project.

Companies are scored on eight key indicators, including “energy productivity” (a ratio of its revenues-to-energy use), carbon emissions and reputational risk, among other metrics.
