Changing the Game by Middle School: Stopping Sexual Harassment Before It Starts

Ninth-grader Sahar Khashayar, of Laguna Niguel, holds a circuit board for her ÒWildfire Early Warning System Using Computer Science.Ó She was an eighth-grader at the Fairmont North Tustin Campus when she submitted it. She created a module for detecting various kinds of fires with an alert system. Khashayar is a finalist in the 2014 Broadcom MASTERS¨ (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) competition.

///ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: stembadge.11XX.cy Ð 11/11/15 Ð CINDY YAMANAKA, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Girl Scouts of Orange County has a new badge for local girls to strive for: My STEM Life badge. It's a first of its kind Girl Scout badge and Orange County is the only council in the country offering it as a way to bridge the skills gap in science, technology, engineering and math. The unique badge program is meant to stimulate interest in STEM careers and is aimed at girls in 6th-8th grades, the crucial middle school and junior high years when girls tend to back away from STEM subjects. Local companies -- Broadcom, Kaiser, Fluor and others -- are involved by creating events and resources to give the girls a fun experience with practical application of STEM knowledge.
